We arrive at Escapade after midnight. The club appears to be in full swing. We had to lose our FBI tail by walking in the front entrance of a completely different venue and right out the back to where the van was waiting—the whole gang this time, including Lynx on his laptop and Ghost in the driver’s seat. Baby Driver is back in the saddle.

Kahlil and Lynx nod at each other, and I go through the motions of introducing them. I’ve given Kahlil the code name K, and they both act like it’s the first time they’ve ever met. Doc then gives us the run of show. My job is to scope out the inside to see if Augustin and his people are present, with the twins as backup. Lynx will monitor our movements remotely with button cameras and microphones. Mine looks like a piercing and clamps to my septum with a little pinch. Kahlil watches, wide-eyed, while we do a mic check.

“What do you think, K? Should I get it pierced?” I reach up with my tongue to try and touch the piercing, and he glowers because I’ve embarrassed him in front of the others. He shifts in his seat, trying to hide his boner—hard yes.

Ghost cruises around the block while we make note of the building’s entrances and exits, including windows and fire escapes, as well as where patrons’ cars are parked, and which ones stand out as possibly belonging to Augustin and his people. I can tell already it’s not going to be easy to identify them. Surveillance alone won’t be enough.

There are a couple bouncers at the door checking ID’s and a line of people a couple dozen deep—guys and girls. A hetero bar it would seem, not a strip club or a brothel unless there are also private rooms somewhere inside. Bass thumps and strobes flash beyond the open door where I can just make out the silhouettes of bodies grinding on the dance floor.

When I first met Augustin Kozak, he was poorly dressed, badly mannered, and could barely speak English. Father Aubert sponsored his brother’s immigration to the U.S. from Hungary so he'd have a business partner he could trust. Now Augustin is running this town, a small empire built on the profits of child slavery and drug trafficking, living out his own American Dream.

“You ready?” Kahlil reaches for my hand. He’s been fitted with an earpiece so he can hear Doc’s commands and relay them to me. Angus and Holly have been dropped off already and are waiting in line. I feel better knowing they’re nearby.

“Yeah, let’s do it.”

Ghost lets us out a couple blocks away, and we walk the rest of the way on foot, me in my sky-high stilettos using Kahlil’s arm for balance. I wish this truly were a fun night out. I’d get Kahlil liquored up, tempt him on the dance floor, then go down on him in the bathroom stall or let him bend me over a dirty toilet and bang me until I can no longer walk straight.
